Tyre sizing

Postby Darren1969 » Mon Mar 08, 2010 9:35 pm

Can anyone advise.

Thinking of getting a set of 235 70 R16 mud tyres but not sure if they will fit 16" J5 1/2 rims. What would be the right size rims for this size tyre?

Thanks

They're a standard size tyre on a military rim then?

You can fit much bigger and better tyres, regardless of the rim. A lot of people with defenders go for 265/75-16's. You should go for the biggest you can, as this gives much better clearance. The only doewn side to bigger tyres is the speedo won't be the same. I wouldn't worry to much about the rims, but if some 7J or wider 16's come up at the right price get them.

I run my Disco on 265/75 16's, and these make the speedo much MORE accurate than as standard. Manufacturers always install a tolerance of at least 5%, so when your speedo says your doing 44mph, your actually not breaking the speed limit if your in a 40 zone (in most cars, and on standard size tyres)

How weird, I've just won some 16" 7J wheels on ebay, six hubs for £75 (why 6 I don't know) and I'm looking at PUMA 265/70R16 tyres to go on them, tyres not ordered yet.

Thanks again for the advice, I'll buy you a pint if we meet.

Cheers.

Are they Japanese rims (and you meant 6 stud?)? If so, they won't fit your 90???

No the rims are 5 stud off a Disco but the guy has a set of 6 for sale, don't think I'll carry 2 spares on my Defender but an additional hub will be handy if I knacker one off roading.

Cheers.

Some people carry 2 spares, because if the tyres are directional, they are only really suited to one side.
